Hi everyone! How are you all? Welcome back again with me on my blog. Today, I wanna explain to all of you about Narrative Text. So, here we go! 

Definition of Narrative Text

Narrative text is a story with complication or problematic events and it tries to find the resolutions to solve the problems. An important part of narrative text is the narrative mode, the set of methods used to communicate the narrative through a process narration.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text
1. Orientation

Sets the scene : where and when the story happened and introduces the participants of the story : who and what is involved in the story.

2. Complication

Tells the beginning of the problems which leads to the crisis (climax) of the main participants.

3. Resolution

The problem (the crisis) is resolved, either in a happy ending or in a sad (tragic) ending.

4. Re-orientation/Coda

This is a closing remark to the story and it is optional. It consists of a moral lesson, advice or teaching from the writer.


Purpose of Narrative Text

The use of the narrative text itself has several purposes, such as entertaining, educating, telling, conveying the author's experience or as a medium to develop the imagination of the reader. Examples of narrative text such as folklore, fairy tales, or fables that are legendary from all parts of the world, although the narrative text is generally imaginative, some narrative text is also factual.


Language Features of Narrative Text

– Past tense (killed, drunk, etc).

– Adverb of time (Once upun a time, one day, etc).

– Time conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc).

– Specific character. The character of the story is specific, not general. (Cinderella, Snow White,
   Alibaba, etc).

– Action verbs. A verb that shows an action. (killed, dug, walked, etc).

– Direct speech. It is to make the story lively. (Snow White said,”My name is Snow White). The direct
   speech uses present tense. 


Example of Narrative Text

Snow White 

Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Snow White. She lived with her Aunt and Uncle because her parents were dead.

One day she heard her Uncle and Aunt talking about leaving Snow White in the castle because they both wanted to go to America and they didn’t have enough money to take Snow White. 

Snow White did not want her Uncle and Aunt to do this so she decided it would be best if she ran away. The next morning she ran away from home when her Aunt and Uncle were having breakfast. She ran away into the woods.

She was very tired and hungry.

Then she saw this little cottage. She knocked but no one answered so she went inside and fell asleep.

Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs were coming home from work. They went inside. There they found Snow White sleeping. Then Snow White woke up. She saw the dwarfs. The dwarfs said, "What is your name?" Snow White said, "My name is Snow White."

Doc said, "If you wish, you may live here with us." Snow White said, "Oh could I? Thank you." Then Snow White told the dwarfs the whole story and Snow White and the 7 dwarfs lived happily ever after.


Activity 3

Maninjau Lake 

In a village at the foot of the mountain Review, West Sumatra, live 10 brothers. They consist of nine boys and one girl. Their mother and father had died. The eldest son named Kukuban. Meanwhile, the youngest who was the only woman, called Siti Rasani or Sani. As the number of male brothers that nine people, residents often call them “like a nine." Since their parents died, they were raised by an uncle, Datuk Limbatang, their usual call Engku. Datuk Limbatang had a son named Giran. After stepping up, Giran and Sani mutually falling in love. At first, they hide the relationship. However, to avoid things that don’t, whether unaccompanied, they finally revealed this connection to each family. Both families were welcome relationship Sani and Gani with joy. When the harvest is over, residents in the Township that holds a celebration indigenous form of martial arts. All eager to follow this ritual, including Kukuban and Giran.

Kukuban skills martial arts defeated his opponents. The same thing happened in Giran. Finally, the two met at a match of determination. When the fight took place, both bring out skills respectively. Kukuban very sharp launched attacks to Giran. At one point, he launched a kick toward the kick Giran, but repulsed by hard by Giran. All the spectators were stunned when suddenly Kukuban screaming in pain. As it turns out, legs broken Kukuban. He declared defeated in battle. Since the incident, Kukuban grudge in Giran. He do not accept being defeated by Giran and caused his leg broken. One day, Datuk Limbatang and his family came to the House servant of Nine to discuss the continuation of the relationship of Sani and Giran. Unpredictably, Kukuban against his sister‘s relationship with Giran. There was a dispute between the Kukuban and Datuk Limbatang.

“Until whenever I would not approve of the marriage of Sani with Engku. Giran is already embarrass me in front of the people and he also broke my leg!" said Kukuban. Datuk Limbatang effort to persuade Kukuban to give his approval, no fruition. “My son, Kukuban, why do you hate Giran? All testified that you were the one who attacked Giran, when he cornered Giran fend off your kick so that your feet are broken. Giran is not guilty. Engku instead of defending his child, but indeed that’s how actual events. “However, all to no avail. Kukuban still refused to give his blessing. Sani and Giran can’t marry. How sad the hearts of Sani and Giran. Giran then invites Sani to meet somewhere to discuss this issue. The next day, they meet in a field on the edge of the river.

“What should we do, Dik? Your brother is very not condone our relationship," lamented Giran. “I dunno, Bang. All decisions have on hand Bang Kukuban. He once hated to Abang," sob Sani. Feeling frantically, Sani depart from his seat. Suddenly, the gloves he wore in a thorny twig stuck up and injuring his leg until it bleeds. Sani moaning in pain “Dik, you hurt. Abang will help treat it," said Giran. Then, Giran took the drug leaves around it and smeared the potion he had made to the wounds of her lover. Both of them do not realize when they are being watched. As it turns out, Kukuban has been calling residents to keep an eye on Sani and Giran. Look at Giran who are treating the wound in the leg, the citizens have a prejudice Sani a bad against both. Sani and Giran herded citizens for trial, because it is considered to have been doing a shameful and violates ethical custom.

Custom hearing decides that they are guilty and as a punishment they both should be thrown into the crater of Mount Review so as not to bring havoc to the population. Sani and Giran herded towards the top of the mountain Review. Their eyes closed with a black cloth. Giran and Sani was still trying to convince the population that they are not guilty. At the peak of the mountain Review, Giran look up his hand and prayed to God Almighty. “Oh My God. If we are not guilty, pop it so that it becomes a lesson for all of them," prayer Giran while in tears. Then, Sani and Giran jumping into the crater that is very hot.

The servant of nine and the inhabitants feel anxiety with prayer thanks Giran. If it turns out they were wrong to assume, they will be crushed. Not long after that, there was a terrible explosion caused the great earthquake which destroyed the Mountain review and settlement of residents who were in the vicinity. There are none who survived. The explosion triggered a crater that the longer the better, so that it resembles a lake. The so-called Maninjau Lake.

Conclusion

Narrative text is a text which tells a story or an account of a sequence of events, usually in chronological events. The purpose of this text is to entertain the reader about the story.
